چکیده
A large quasar group (LQG) of particularly large size and high membership has been identified in the DR7QSO catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. It has characteristic size (volume1/3) ∼500 Mpc (proper size, present epoch), longest dimension ∼1240 Mpc, membership of 73 quasars and mean redshift z̄ = 1.27. In terms of both size and membership, it is the most extreme LQG found in the DR7QSO catalogue for the redshift range 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 1.8 of our current investigation. Its location on the sky is∼8. ◦8 north (∼615 Mpc projected) of the Clowes & Campusano LQG at the same redshift, z̄ = 1.28, which is itself one of the more extreme examples. Their boundaries approach to within ∼2◦ (∼140 Mpc projected). This new, HugeLQG appears to be the largest structure currently known in the early Universe. Its size suggests incompatibility with the Yadav et al. scale of homogeneity for the concordance cosmology, and thus challenges the assumption of the cosmological principle.

The Shape, Multiplicity, and Evolution of Superclusters in ΛCDM Cosmology
We determine the shape, multiplicity, size, and radial structure of superclusters in the ΛCDM concordance cosmology from z = 0 to z = 2. Superclusters are defined as clusters of clusters in our large-scale cosmological simulation. We find that superclusters are triaxial in shape; many have flattened since early times to become nearly two-dimensional structures at present, with a small fraction ...
متن کاملTesting Homogeneity with Galaxy Star Formation Histories
Observationally confirming spatial homogeneity on sufficiently large cosmological scales is of importance to test one of the underpinning assumptions of cosmology, and is also imperative for correctly interpreting dark energy. A challenging aspect of this is that homogeneity must be probed inside our past lightcone, while observations take place on the lightcone. The star formation history (SFH...
متن کاملCosmic homogeneity demonstrated with luminous red galaxies
We test the homogeneity of the Universe at z ∼ 0.3 with the Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) spectroscopic sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. First, the mean number N(R) of LRGs within completely surveyed LRG-centered spheres of comoving radius R is shown to be proportional to R at radii greater than R ∼ 70 h Mpc. The test has the virtue that it does not rely on the assumption that the LRG sample...
متن کاملVariable Speed of Light Cosmology: An Alternative to Inflation
It is generally believed that inflationary cosmology explains the isotropy, large scale homogeneity and flatness as well as predicting the deviations from homogeneity of our universe. We show that this is not the only cosmology which can explain successfully these features of the universe. We review a model in which local Lorentz invariance is spontaneously broken in the very early universe, an...
متن کاملThe Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Clustering of Galaxies as a Function of Luminosity
We measure the clustering of DEEP2 galaxies at z = 1 as a function of luminosity on scales 0.1 h Mpc to 20 h Mpc. Drawing from a parent catalog of 25,000 galaxies at 0.7 < z < 1.3 in the full DEEP2 survey, we create volume-limited samples having upper luminosity limits between MB = −19 and MB = −20.5, roughly 0.2 − 1L ∗ at z = 1. We find that brighter galaxies are more strongly clustered than f...
